The Importance of “Story”

I used to believe that my value as a 3D artist lay heavily in the tools I mastered.

As a young adult transitioning from school to the real world, there were many things to figure out—future career, job searches, earning money, and especially building professional profiles.

In most job applications, the question I encounter most often is, “Please check the software you have experience with.” I can’t deny that this has made me think software defines who I am as an artist.

In contrast, I find it much harder to fill out the section, “Tell us more about yourself.” What story can I tell that makes me stand out from others?

Surprisingly, my work experience with Thought Merchants this summer changed my perspective. Working there made me realize that “story” is at the core of every project. It guides decisions and execution, leading to a successful outcome.

Tools are essential, but the story behind the work is equally important. It is the heart and soul, rooted in the identity of the work. Without a story, there’s not much to see—the outcome will just be eye candy.

This experience has inspired me to challenge how I present myself. Now, I want to know the tools and tell my own story.

I’ve also been encouraged to start writing articles on my website, dedicated to the magic I discover along this journey. Storytelling isn’t just for projects—it’s a powerful tool for personal growth as well.
