Redesigning Venice Beach Environment
(Work In Progress)

Procedural Beach House Generator, Inspired by the work of Simon Verstraete

In this collaboration with Thought Merchants, I am redesigning the map of Venice Beach. This project aims to creatively present the neighborhood to newcomers visiting their studios near Venice Beach.

Excerpts of Venice Map from OpenStreetMap location at: https://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=17/33.979377/-118.464943

The project began by importing map data from OpenStreetMap.org into SideFX Houdini. This provided essential information, including building layouts, street networks, and categorizations such as apartments, offices, and houses. This dataset served as the foundation for procedural modeling and design.

Once the map and associated data were imported into Houdini, I utilized procedural techniques to enhance the buildings with stylized details. For instance, I used logical operations to extrude faces oriented along the Y-axis to generate roofs. Additionally, I programmed the edges of extruded faces to form lines, which were then used to sweep geometry and create detailed borders and trims for the structures.

The Final goal of this project is to capture the vibrancy and unique character of Venice Beach, transcending the limitations of a conventional map. By highlighting the perspective of local residents, the project seeks to enable newcomers and visitors to fully experience the distinctive essence of this iconic destination.
