VR Camping Simulation

Hello, everyone!

I’d like to share a breakdown and personal reflection on a project I completed during my coursework at the School of Visual Arts. This project is a VR camping simulation, and it was one of my very first experiences working in VR. Initially, I wasn’t a fan of VR, as wearing a headset often made me dizzy. However, this project completely changed my perspective. I was mesmerized by how VR could instantly transport me to an entirely different world just by putting on the goggles.

Experience Reel

In this scene, I recall experimenting with the flashlight. Holding it, spinning it around, and observing how the virtual environment responded felt incredibly realistic. It was fascinating to see the connection between my physical movements and their virtual outcomes.

Besides the flashlight, the project featured a virtual remote that allowed users to interact with and control the environment. The interface included options to change the weather, adjust the time of day, or set specific lighting conditions like a foggy sunrise or a sunny midday. Users could also modify weather conditions, such as rain or snow, making the experience highly immersive.

My inspiration for this project came from my love of outdoor activities. I’ve enjoyed camping and outdoor adventures, including memorable trips in recreational vehicles with friends. Those experiences inspired me to create this virtual environment, offering a sense of rehabilitation and escape from the concrete jungle of New York City. Sure, we have Central Park, but let’s face it—that’s not quite the same as being immersed in the great outdoors!

The goal of this project was to provide a calming, nature-inspired experience for users while giving them a sense of control over their surroundings. By simulating a safe, customizable environment, the VR experience fosters peace and relaxation.

Overall, I am incredibly proud of this project. It’s a space I genuinely enjoy spending time in, and it’s an achievement that reflects both my creativity and technical skills.
